Puzzle Mode is an optional minigame featuring collectible jigsaw puzzle pieces that was added to Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, and does not appear in the original version of Kingdom Hearts II. The minigame becomes available after Sora receives his new outfit, which includes a new short scene in which a puzzle piece falls out of his pocket. No one knows what it is, but Merryweather urges him to hold on to it, and Jiminy Cricket says he will note them in his journal.
The pieces, presented as floating silver miniature crowns with a golden glow, can be found throughout every single world. The difficulty for acquiring pieces varies; ranging from zero effort, to more and more complex maneuvering using the terrain, as well as the growth abilities; High Jump, Aerial Dodge, and Glide. Sometimes pieces can be collected through other means, such as using a mid-air attack to extend airtime, or by using the skateboard.
Each piece is part of a larger puzzle, of which there are six in total, with four of them requiring only 12 pieces, whereas the latter two have 48. Pieces, once collected, also have to be individually arranged in the right spot, sometimes also requiring rotations. Completing a puzzle grants a single reward. Aside from using a reference image for solving the puzzle, an easier way (especially for the largest two) is to look for the colored borders and position those first, which allows the rest to follow smoothly.
