Phil's Training (フィルのトレーニング Firu no Torēningu?), also known as Beginner Training, is a mini-game found in Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts II and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. The mini-game involves the breaking of several barrels or pots within a certain set period of time to earn points. The number of points needed varies depending on the game.

Kingdom Hearts[]

In the original Kingdom Hearts, Phil used his training to test Sora. He put him through two rounds of the training that involved Sora destroying barrels. At the end, Phil concluded that Sora was not too bad, but still couldn't compete in the games. He gave him the Thunder spell to master. Once Traverse Town's Keyhole has been sealed, it is not possible for Sora to attempt Phil's training any more, however, after receiving the Thunder spell, it is not possible to gain nothing for trying again.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days[]

Story[]

In Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Roxas meets Phil in the Coliseum Vestibule and is put through Phil's Training. Upon completion, Roxas asks why people are needed for training. Phil explains that there has been an influx of Heartless, and that the bona fide hero has been overworked as a consequence. Thus, he explains that more people are needed to help out. After Phil has explained how the tournament works, Roxas also inquires as to whether he can enter the Games themselves, at which Phil scoffs. He admits that Roxas shows promise, but that he is not ready in the slightest to enter the Games themselves.

Strategy[]

During the mini-game, Roxas is required to break barrels by hitting them. If a barrel is knocked towards another barrel, both barrels will break. Red barrels also act as bombs once hit, and are able to destroy barrels in an area around the explosion. If at least 100 points are earned, Xigbar will reward Roxas with Bronze on Day 149.

Kingdom Hearts II[]

In Kingdom Hearts II, after Sora, Donald and Goofy return from the Underworld, they go to the Coliseum to visit Hercules and Phil. Naturally, Phil drags them into doing some training, as they still haven't reached hero status just yet. In this minigame, Sora must destroy floating pots to receive orbs. There are three goals to reach after first attempting the minigame:

  • Try Practice Mode
  • Try Maniac Mode
  • Make 1000 or more points within 01'30"00

In Practice Mode, Sora needs to get 20 points in 1'30"00. In Maniac Mode, Sora needs to obtain 1000 points in 1'30"00.
