Gummi blocks in Kingdom Hearts and the Final Mix version are items used to construct gummi ships. They are used by both the player character, and the Heartless, to travel through interspace. The more blocks the player has, the more powerful the ship they can build in the gummi garage, as well as construct specific ship blueprints they collected.
The most common blocks are acquired by destroying objects and enemy ships while traveling to worlds, and picking up the remains. The majority can also be purchased at Cid's Gummi Shop in Traverse Town, especially when he fully expands his stock (he also sells system upgrades for the garage). Cid's shop is unlocked after bringing two Navi-G Pieces to him, from which he constructs a Navi-Gummi, letting Sora, Donald, and Goofy's ship travel through warp holes. Although technically a gummi block, the Warp-G is not actually placeable.
The more obscure and powerful blocks on the other hand can only be acquired through finding them in treasure chests (the normal version of the game also had a lot of common blocks, but Final Mix replaced all of these), or as a reward for completing an optional objective or minigame. Returning all 99 puppies to Pongo and Perdita also grants a 100% complete set of all blocks, making collecting them otherwise obsolete. Final Mix changed this set to only contain one each of the basic blocks, instead of a maximum amount of everything.
Final Mix also included the addition of gummi ship missions, which reward new design-type gummi blocks, as well as new blueprints.
Mechanics[]
Each gummi block has an effect on the ship it's placed on. The core of a ship is the cockpit, of which it can have only one, and which will have a powerful base effect. Together with an engine gummi, which affects flight speed, they allow ships to fly through interspace. The most common blocks, Protect-G, Shell-G, and Dispel-G, all serve to add armor (although almost all blocks will add some degree of armor), act as filler, and aid in the basic shaping of each ship, thanks to their large shape variety. The wing gummies affect a ship's handling and the weapon gummies serve as the damage output.
The aforementioned design-type blocks have no actual function, unlike the special-type blocks, which have a selection of more esoteric functions, like shielding, a larger item grab range, radar, and a boost option.
Gummi blocks[]
The original version of Kingdom Hearts often includes relatively worthless Shell-G and Dispel-G blocks in chests, whereas Final Mix removes these in place of various weapon, engine, special, and a few cockpit gummis, to more accurately reflect the various blocks you actually make use of. Due to this Final Mix also removes all the better quality blocks from Cid's Gummi Shop.
Cockpits[]
All cockpits have a size of a 2 by 2 by 2 (2x2x2) block, a base armor level of 200, and a limit (and requirement) of one per ship. As their only change is the innate ability of each cockpit it is recommended to always equip the best one available.
Block | Description | Price | Availability |
---|---|---|---|
Cure-G | Enhances recovery items' effect a bit. | — | Default cockpit. |
Curaga-G | Enhances recovery items' effect. | 500 | Sold at the Gummi Shop after completing Agrabah. |
Life-G | Restores ARM once when it runs out. | 750 | Sold at the Gummi Shop after rescuing Kairi.[a] |
Full-Life-G | Restores max ARM once when it runs out. | — | Inside a chest in the Giant Crevasse in End of the World. |
Engines[]
Engines are used to propel the ship, although the direction they face does not actually matter. The amount of engines you can actually place on your ship is limited to a maximum of eight, with the better engines limited to half that, and the best at a capacity of only two per ship. Top tier engines have a high innate armor stat, making it beneficial to try and use them to the limit regardless.
A gummi ship's speed is calculated as follows: Take the maximum speed stat of your best engine (X), multiply this by the horsepower from all engines (Y), then divide this by the total number of blocks used for your ship (Z), which results in your actual speed value (A). (X × Y ÷ Z = A). Note that A cannot exceed your maximum speed stat, nor go below your minimum speed stat, of that of your best engine gummi.

Armor blocks[]
All armor blocks come in a variety of shapes, but each one takes up one single cube of space. They do have a varying limit and armor level however. The Protect-G blocks are also the only ones ever available for purchase. The actual armor stat granted to your ship is equal to the sum of all your ship's blocks' armor, rounded down to a number divisble by 25.
Block | Description | Shape | Limit | Armor | Price |
---|---|---|---|---|---|

Wings[]
Wings are used for a ship's maneuverability, defined by the wing gummis' handling stat. All wings possess a mirrored version, indicated in-game with an arrow for left or right. Flipping a wing over is not the same as creating a mirrored version, as they are always placed near the bottom edge of a block. The basic Aero-G wing also includes a square shape variant.
A ship without wings has a maneuverability stat of 100, whereas adding wings will involve the following formula: The sum of all wings' handling stat, divided by the total number of wings used. Due to this you can technically only use Tornado-Gs to get the best handling, with everything else being slightly worse.
Block | Description | Size | Limit | Armor | Handling | Price |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Aero-G | Wing for making adjustments. | 1×1×1 | 99 | 5 | 98 | 20 |
Aerora-G | Slightly improves maneuverability. | 1×1×2 | 30 | 15 | 105 | 40 |
Aeroga-G | Improves maneuverability. | 1×1×3 | 20 | 12 | 110 | — |

Tornado-G | Greatly improves maneuverability. | 2×1×2 | 10 | 10 | 120 | — |
Weapons[]
Although the Comet-G, Meteor-G, and Ultima-G weapons are a series of increasingly stronger homing lasers, the Thunder-G weapons are each unique. The basic Thunder-G fires straight-ahead, whereas the Thundara-G fires in an outward V-shaped pattern, and it can also be placed on its side to fire both up and down. The Thundaga-G cannon fires a slower, but powerful missile. The Thunder-G series also does not consume Power, unlike the other three (except for the Thundaga-G, whose consumption is a very minor 0.1).

Special blocks[]
The Drain-G and Osmose-G blocks each come in a left and right variation. They, and the Transform-G gummi, each cost 1 power to be used. All gummis are sold by Cid, except the Transform-G and Warp-G gummis, which are instead received for free upon delivering enough Navi-G Pieces and Navi-Gummis to him.

Design blocks[]
These unique blocks were introduced in Final Mix and can only be found by completing gummi missions. Although their main purpose is to visually make your ship stand out more, they do have some minor armor levels. The Angel-G, Dark-G, and Drill-G gummis were also used in Kingdom Hearts II and do actually have a function in the first game. The two wings have a handling level of respectively 125 and 130, and the Drill-G has a power level of 35[b], letting you use it to ram enemies. None of them also have collision detection. The Rock-G, Paper-G, and Scissors-G gummis also come in left and right variations.
