Ephemer is a Keyblade wielder first introduced in Kingdom Hearts χ. He is a member of the same Union as Skuld, though which Union this is is directly dependent on the Union that the player is a member of.

He is one of the key characters during the time of the ancient Keyblade War, and reappears in Kingdom Hearts III to aid Sora.

Personality[]

Ephemer constantly seeks to discover the truth behind the gathering of Lux and the structure of the world. He displays a high level of curiosity. Despite the Book of Prophecies being highly restricted, he desires to have knowledge and truth, even talking to one of the Foretellers, most noticeably Ava, as both have a casual conversation by the fountain in Daybreak Town.

Centuries after his physical death, Ephemer was still dutiful of his duties as a Keyblade wielder and new Union Leader, as his heart remained in the Keyblade Graveyard and assisting the new generation of Keyblade wielders in fighting against the 13 Seekers of Darkness.

Physical Appearance[]

Ephemer has curly, silver hair and blue eyes. He wears a white shirt, black vest, dark grey pants, and black boots. A red scarf is wrapped around Ephemer's neck.

History[]

Kingdom Hearts χ[]

Ephemer is a member of a different Union to the Player. When he first meets them, he reveals that the Lux the player is tasked with collecting from the various worlds truly belongs to Daybreak Town. He also claims that the worlds the player has visited up to this point are actually illusions created by the tomes of the Book of Prophecies that each Foreteller possesses. After the player tells Ephemer about a strange dream they had which included the Foretellers and another mysterious figure, the Keyblade wielder decides to team up with them and investigate this matter.

Together, Ephemer and the Player dispatch several Heartless as they make their way towards the Foretellers' headquarters. The two ultimately decide to abandon their investigation, and soon afterwards, Ephemer mysteriously disappears. Some time later, the Player has a dream about Ephemer in which the Keyblade wielder asks Foreteller Ava to divulge the secrets of the Book of Prophecies. Ava refuses.

The next day, Ephemer reunites with the Player in their dreams. The two briefly resume their earlier investigation. When the Player awakens, they learn in a conversation with Foreteller Ava that Ephemer may be in another dimension and is possibly using dreams to communicate as he closes in on a hidden truth.

When the Player meets an enigmatic Keyblade wielder named Skuld, she reveals that Ephemer is from her Union and seems to have changed. Skuld claims Ephemer is also appearing to her in her dreams; in one, she reveals, he tells her the world is nearing its end.

True enough, he learned the truth much more faster than the other Foretellers. Ava meets Ephemer and gives him a task to go to the outside world. When the time comes, he and the other Keyblade wielders who are not involved in the war have to recreate the world after the original world meets its end. Thus, due to their role in guiding the Dandelions, Ephemer and Skuld were not involved in the war and their hearts were not covered in Darkness. Ephemer and Skuld both appear at the Keyblade graveyard to rescue the Player, who was wounded after the clash between the Unions.

Kingdom Hearts Union χ[]

Ephemer meets his fellow Union leaders Skuld, Brain, and Venus in a data version of the Keyblade graveyard. Brain wonders if they should tell the other Dandelions of the old world but Ephemer disagrees, telling him that the Keyblade War was too big a burden for them to bear. A long while later Lauriam shows up and explains that he was looking for someone.

With all the Union leaders present, they make their way to the master's study. Ephemer wants to keep the current Unions in place however wants to decide where the wielders will go later. He also suggests telling the wielders about the Foretellers after their training is completed. The Union leader agree while Brain discovers their first task. He wants to celebrate their arrival by giving everyone a spirit, a companion similar to the Chirithy that would devour nightmare and memories of the Keyblade War. They agree and devise a plan to gather the materials. Brain and Lauriam will prepare the equipment while, Ephemer, Skuld and Venus look for materials.

After they were finished with their tasks Ephemer and Lauriam meet in the master's study, wondering about Shift Pride, a friendly competition between the wielders. Lauriam questions if it is just a joke but reiterates his desire to find someone. He reasons that since they are in a data world, there should be a data backup of the person he's looking for and leaves.

Ephemer called a meeting of the Union leaders, to which all but Lauriam showed up. Brain assures Ephemer that Lauriam's vote would be with Ephemer. Ephemer discusses Shift Pride, an event that would entail Keyblade wielders fighting each other for sport and questions its inclusion. Venus and Skuld voted against it while Brain for it, leaving Ephemer's dual vote as the tie breaker. Ephemer voted in favor but, didn't want the wielders to physically fight each other. Using the data backups of the wielders in the Unions, the real Keyblade wielders could fight each other without hurting the real person. The Union leaders agree to this plan.

After the meeting, Lauriam approached the Union leaders, to explain what he's learned if his sister; that she was curious about an unknown person and that Strelitzia disappeared before the Keyblade War. Brain summarized that Strelitzia must have been trying to recruit this mystery person before she disappeared and that they must have fought in the Keyblade War. Ephemer recognized that this description matches that of the Player and so leads Lauriam to meet them.

Ephemer introduced the Player to Lauriam by the fountain in data Daybreak Town. After confirming that the Player doesn't know where Strelitzia is, Ephemer stayed with them for the day while Lauriam left to check on Elrena.

At the end of the day, Ephemer and the Player noticed a glitched cloud over the Daybreak Town tower and went to investigate. They fought through Heartless and meet up with Venus who was looking for Brain in the Tower Control Room. In the Control room, Brain managed to stabilizes the glitches while providing insight to their situation.

Before the Keyblade War, the Book of Prophecies was used to allow Keyblade wielders to visit the worlds of the future to gather lux. Since the worlds were connected by such vast lands, this was the only realistic way of visiting these places. However after the Keyblade War the books would be lost so, digital recreations of these worlds were made in order for Keyblade wielders to continue go to these worlds. However their data world recently connected to an unknown world, causing the glitches. The Player and Ephemer are sent to explore this new world.

They learned that this world was the Game Central Station and was connected to many different worlds. They split up with Ephemer taking on the Heartless while the Player looks for the source of the glitches.

Later Ephemer reunites with the player in the Cy-bug Sector and they fight a cybugs-darkling hybrid. Afterward the Player tells him that Ralph might be connected to the glitches so, Ephemer go back to the Daybreak Town tower to tell the rest of the Union leaders.

Kingdom Hearts III[]

At an undetermined period following the Keyblade War, Ephemer's physical body perished. However, part of him remained in the Keyblade Graveyard, likely due to his connection to the place. Shortly before the confrontation between the Seven Guardians of Light and the Thirteen Seekers of Darkness, he appeared in a vision to Sora, assisting him alongside other ancient Keyblade wielders in a battle against a colossal Demon Tide, the former taking the form of the Keyblade each wielded in the past. After the battle, the Keyblades converged and disappeared in a burst of light.

Abilities[]

As a Keyblade wielder, he can wield a Keyblade in combat.

He was able to appear in the dreams of other people, in order to guide them to the Dandelions.

As the spirit within the Keyblade Graveyard, Ephemer was capable of manifesting in Sora's vision and command the fallen Keyblades to assist the group in battle against the whirlpool of Heartless.

Trivia[]

  • In the end, Ephemer cried at the "apparent betrayal", of Player unaware that Player had staged it all just to give him and Skuld a chance to survive. Unless it's recorded in or he reads the book of prophecies, Ephemer will most likely never know what truly happened.
